Wyndham Championship Golf Preview

The 42nd and final PGA Tour event of the regular season is upon us as players position themselves for a run at the FedEx Cup title beginning next week. This week the players are outside Greensboro, N.C., for the 2021 Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club.

The tournament begins on August 12th and concludes on August 15th. The winner receives 500 FedEx Cup points and over $1.15 million in winnings. The total purse is $6.4 million. 

Jim Herman is the defending champion after carding 21-under over four days of play last season. Herman shot up board on Sunday with a final round 63 (-7) to beat Billy Horschel by one stroke. The victory was the third of his career for the 43-year-old Herman.

Sedgefield Country Club

The Sedgefield Country Club has hosted a PGA Tour tournament each year since 2008. The course was designed by Donald Ross and opened its doors to its members in 1926. Approximately 7,130 yards in length, the course plays as a par-70.

Along with the Detriot Country Club, Sedgefield is the only two courses on the PGA Tour that host a tournament on a Ross’ designed track. The most recent winners have scored well here, but players will need to be precise on the small and unglued green complexes that are a common trait among Ross’s designs.

The Playing Field

The Wyndham Championship will host 156 players this week, with many of them trying to punch their ticket to the Northern Trust next week. With many of the top players already locked in, the field this week isn’t overly impressive but still has enough firepower to draw our attention.

The field features names like Rickie Fowler, Webb Simpson, Tommy Fleetwood, Louis Oosthuizen, and Hideki Matsuyama. Fowler is one to watch closely as one of the players currently outside the top 125. Fowler currently sits at 130 and needs a good weekend to avoid missing the playoffs for the first time in his career.

Another name to watch is rookie golfer Will Zalatoris. Zalatoris has pieced together a remarkable first season on Tour with eight top-10 finishes in 24 events. However, the 24-year old only has special temporary membership on the PGA Tour and is ineligible to play in the playoffs unless he wins this week.

Statistics to Target

When looking at the players to take this week before Thursday’s start, there are a few key statistics to target to lower the sample size of players that should have a good week. The course is relatively short to PGA Tour standards, so approach shots on the small greens are essential. Target players that rank high in Strokes Gained: Approached.

The winning scores have dipped into 20-below or the past five seasons, so players will need to go low to have a shot. Birdie scoring is another statistic provided by the PGA Tour took a look into before placing your wagers.

Finally, historically the players that have won here recently are good putters. The greens are tricky and play very quickly on the Bermuda grass. Players on these surfaces should see their names near the top of the leaderboards come Sunday afternoon.
